password manager and security

Recently there was a news article about Yahoo’s Security breach, in which billions of account details were compromised. This is NOT the first time and this will also NOT be the last time a security of a company is breached and all the details are compromised. It is in our best interest to take full care of how we use and manage our account details such as passwords.

Now why is it that you have to be careful about how you manage your passwords? What can you do to protect your details from an unauthorized person?

  1. Do NOT use the same password for multiple websites.
  2. Never ever store your password in place which could be accessed by anyone and used.
  3. Always use password generators to generate password. Its harder to remember passwords when you deal with 100’s of websites that you access.
  4. We suggest that you change your password every few months. A password generator within the password manager tool will make this easy for you.

Now #2 begs the question as to how we do it? Thankfully there are numerous softwares available to manage and store your encrypted passwords.

My favorite has always been 1Password. The nice thing about this tool is that it works well with apple software and also with dropbox. Which makes it easier to use it across devices.
